Post-migration review: Cologne to Frankfurt

On August 12, 2026, at 5:00 PM, we successfully completed the migration from Cologne to Frankfurt, originally scheduled for August 14. This migration is the centerpiece of the comprehensive restructuring currently underway.

Not according to plan

To be perfectly honest, nothing went as originally planned. Some customers had reserved specific IP addresses, and our initial intention was to clone the legacy cloud servers. Neither process worked as expected. Due to the high read/write loads on the old servers, cloning them without risking data loss was not feasible. Consequently, we made the last-minute decision to decommission the old servers in Cologne (in a staged rollout) and migrate them to Frankfurt instead. Furthermore, Frankfurt utilizes entire clusters rather than individual compute resources, manually reconfiguring IP addresses for over 5,000 servers per cluster was not time-viable and would have significantly delayed the migration.

Noticeably improved performance

Early feedback from customers has been positive. In addition to the rapid adoption of the new IPv6 addresses, users have specifically noted the significantly improved network speeds and lower latency. Every new cloud server is now automatically provisioned with a primary IPv6 address, with the option to order additional ones. Today, every existing server was also retrofitted with a primary IPv6 address.

New cloud packages and better availability

We have finally resolved the long-standing unavailability of our cloud packages. All packages (excluding Enterprise and Storage) are now fully available. Enterprise packages are currently available upon request, as our primary focus is on serving residential customers who have been waiting weeks or months for an available server. Since Frankfurt is currently in a "testing phase" where we continue to implement various adjustments and optimizations, we have decided to hold back the storage servers for the time being to minimize the potential impact of any issues. We plan to add storage servers to our product portfolio in the coming days, as soon as operations in Frankfurt are fully stabilized.

Furthermore, we have updated our cloud package lineup. The packages BG2-6-12, BG2-12-24, BG-24-48, RG2-1-4, RG2-6-24, RG2-12-48, and RG2-24-96 are now available. This lowers our entry-level price for cloud servers to €7.50 per month and offers greater flexibility through these smaller configurations.

Summary

While the migration did not proceed exactly as planned, the final outcome is one we are pleased with. We were unable to clone the servers and had to migrate them manually; while the specifically reserved IPs could not be assigned as requested, everyone is still successfully integrated into the planned IP network. It was not a 100% perfect success, but we are satisfied with the result. We look forward to a fantastic future in Frankfurt.
